A dark shape moved inside the leader’s den. RiverStar woke up, stretching and grooming the moss out of his pelt. He padded outside, where the dawning sun was just above the hills and willows. Then, the shape of a mentor and apprentice came.
RiverStar watched them both. “Yes, Sunfur?”
Sunfur dipped her head for a moment, then looked up. “Hello, RiverStartar. Proudpaw is shaping up to a great warrior. I think it’s time we made him one.”
RiverStar looked at the reddish tabby tom, nodding slowly. “Yes, you’re right. Take the dawn patrol with Silverpool, and then we’ll have his ceremony at sunhigh. You’ll be right before Silentkit. She becomes an apprentice today.”
Sunfur nodded, and Proudpaw looked ready to burst out of his pelt with excitement. Then, the pair left.
RiverStar watched them leave for a moment, then looked around for his deputy, Maskheart. The brown tom was coming up to him right now. “Maskheart, I want you to organize hunting patrols. I’ll lead one, and you see to the others.”
Maskheart nodded, then looked at the warriors emerging from their dens.
RiverStar looked through them. “Lilyrose, get your apprentice and Duskclaw. We’re going on a hunting patrol.
The yellow she-cat nodded, and turned to a silver tom. Then, she yowled, “Wavepaw, come here!”
The young blue-gray apprentice mewed a good-bye to her friends, and dashed over. “Hunting?” she mewed when she saw them.
RiverStar nodded. “Yes.”
Duskclaw nodded. “Then let’s go!”
* * *
The patrol came back just before sunhigh, their mouths full with fresh-kill. RiverStar had a rabbit and several mice, Lilyrose had a starling and two voles, Duskclaw came back with rabbit and a thrush, while Wavepaw had a fish with a few mice.
They dropped their catch on the fresh-kill pile, and RiverStar looked around the camp. Silentkit was waiting at the entrance to the nursery with her mother, Flowerpelt. Sunfur and Proudpaw were in the apprentices’ den. RiverStar nodded to himself, and climbed up the Pebble Tree to his perch.
“Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather beneath the Pebble Tree for a Clan meeting!” RiverStar yowled. He watched the Clan gather, and waited until Proudpaw and Silentkit were present.
“Proudpaw, step forward,” he said, watching the tom step forward eagerly. Then, he began.
“I, RiverStar, leader of RainClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down upon this apprentice. He has trained hard to understand the ways of you noble code, and I commend him to you as a warrior in his turn.”
RiverStar looked down at the excited apprentice, smiling slightly at his impatience.
“Proudpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code, and to protect and defend this Clan, even at the cost of your life?”
Proudpaw nodded, his eyes gleaming. “I do,” he meowed solemnly.
RiverStar nodded. “Then by the powers of StarClan, I give you your warrior name. Proudpaw, from this moment on, you will be known as Proudfoot. StarClan honors your courage and your determination, and we welcome you as a full member of RainClan.”
RiverStar leapt down to the newly-named Proudfoot. He rested his muzzle on Proudfoot’s head, and Proudfoot gave RiverStar’s shoulder a respectful lick. “You have served your Clan well, Proudfoot. Now, serve it even better in the moons to come,” RiverStar whispered.
The Clan cheered, chanting Proudfoot’s name. “Proudfoot! Proudfoot!”
RiverStar waited for the chanting to stop, allowing Proudfoot to enjoy this moment. “Proudfoot, tonight you will sit vigil until the dawning sun rises.”
Proudfoot nodded, and slipped back into the crowd. “Now,” RiverStar called, “we have one more ceremony to perform. Silentkit, please come up here.”
RiverStar watched the young kit step up, her silvery-gray pelt bright in the sun.
“From this day forward, until she has earned her warrior name, this apprentice will be called Silentpaw,” RiverStar watched the young apprentice’s reaction. She lifted her head and nodded nervously.
“Bravesoul, you are a brave and skillful warrior. I except you to pass on everything you know to this young apprentice.”
A calico tom came out of the surrounding cats, and touched noses with Silentpaw. RiverStar nodded, and watched them pad back into the crowd.
“Before this meeting is dismissed, I want to warn you. Proudfoot, Sunfur, and Silverpool scented rogues on the dawn patrol. From now on, apprentices aren’t allowed to leave camp without a warrior, and kits need to stay in the nursery. Queens, I want you to inspect the nursery walls to make sure there are no holes that an enemy can get through and,” RiverStar’s whiskers twitched, “no holes for adventurous kits to get out of. If you find any, the apprentices are free to patch them up.”
RiverStar looked up at the sky. The sun was just about to set. “This Clan meeting is over.”
RiverStar leapt down and gestured with his tail to Maskheart. “You will send out the patrols for tonight and tomorrow.” Maskheart nodded, and went over to where several warriors were eating. RiverStar just realized how hungry he was. He walked over to the fresh-kill pile, and picked out a rabbit, and brought it over to his senior warriors, Serpentfang, Ghostfang, Cougarpelt, Skytail, and Sparrowwing. Maskheart arrived after he had assigned patrols.
They talked about ways they could prepare the camp, and who these rogues might be. By the time they had finished, the moon was starting to rise. RiverStar bid them goodnight, and padded over to his den.
RiverStar slipped into his nest, his mind whirling with all of the suggestions the senior warriors had given him, the apprentices, these rogues, his new duties…
RiverStar chided himself. I’ve made it this far. I can do this…
